Thanks

As a child, the day after Christmas was always a struggle. The reason being, my parents made me write thank-you notes, with the implicit threat that if I didn’t, there would be less presents next year. I remember agonizing over writing them. Funny writing and mailing my Christmas list wasn’t nearly as difficult. As I grew older, the task did not get any easier. In fact in my early twenties I constructed a form thank you letter with a mail merge just to make things go faster. So why now do I find myself designing custom cards and hand writing thank you notes for everything from gifts received to dinner invites? Read more »

Daddy Issues

My wife and I watched “Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang” the other night and were pleasantly surprised. It was a fun movie and I liked Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer in it. At one point, Robert Downey Jr. wonders what it is about LA where all the girls there have Daddy issues. That theme follows through the rest of the movie as well. Coincidentally, Amy asked me to read Captivating, which is the female version of Wild at Heart and deals with women and what makes them female. I’m reading this book about all these women who had dysfunctional relationships with their father and the repercussions of that later in their life.  It made me want to go home and hug my daughter, that’s for sure. Favorite Blogs

There are a handful of blogs that I read on a regular basis. I like their focus the community they foster. Since most tread around the same area as Balance in All Things, I thought I’d recommend them to you.

Get Rich Slowly  This was the first blog that I read regularly. What was interesting was that JD (the site owner) and I finished our debt-removal programs around the same time. It is a great site with practical thoughts on money.

Consumerist  The focus on this is consumer alerts and action. Basically it hs warnings about companies that fail at customer service and kudos to those who succeed. It is full of suggestions about what to do if a company fails you.

Art of Manliness Originally, this caught my eye because the owner is from Tulsa. This is all about men being the best man they can be. The blog’s style and purpose are well-defined and the community is always ready to help.

Dumb Little Man  A story of a man and his attempt to better himself and deal with life. A variety of topics geared towards men and the situations they often find themselves in.

Unclutterer  A blog about removing clutter? Sign me up. It is a great help in keeping my eye on the prize.

The Simple Dollar  (clutter is money) The latest post (Clutter is Money) really hit home with me. This is a great site that gives simple tips to help its readers use their money in the best way possible.

So take a gander at these other sites, but be sure to come back to mine tomorrow. I’d miss you if you left.

Will it be Any Easier Later?

I came across the above quote in a book about organizing things. It struck me as being the perfect compliment to the whole “person of action” concept that I’m trying to live. Simply put, when you have a task that you want to put off, you ask “will it be any easier later?” If the answer is yes, then put it off until the appropriate time. If the answer is no, then just start it already. You’ll get it over with sooner and then it will be something you accomplished rather than something you need to do. Read more »

You Wouldn’t Like me When I’m Angry

I taught my Sunday School class last Sunday and the topic was on anger. Basically we talked about anger and how to deal with it by looking at Proverbs and discussing anger in our lives. We have a great Sunday School class because we tend to be really honest with one another. If someone makes a mistake in their life, they own up to it and move on. Contrast that to other classes I’ve been in where everyone is fine all the time. Anyway, the discussion on anger was very interesting. Many of the men said they used to have a bad temper, but they’ve controlled it now. Clearly we can’t control when we get angry, but we can definitely control the results of that anger. Read more »
